First, you’ll want to decide where you and your family will stay. Since many hotels and shelters don’t allow pets, your best bet may be to evacuate in your own vehicle. In this case, you can pack the following in a waterproof, easy-to-carry container:

  • A secure pet carrier, cage or crate, and a leash or harness
  • Pet bedding, toys, and treats
  • A muzzle, since pets can become anxious and bite
  • An up-to-date identification tag on your pet’s collar or proof of ownership, such as a picture with you and your pet
  • Photocopies and/or USB of medical records
  • One week’s worth of food and water for each pet, including dishes, spoons, and a can opener
  • Clean-up supplies, including paper towels, newspaper, kitty litter with pan and scoop for cats, and disposable bags for waste
